Dr. Susannah Whitwell

Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Whitwell co-founded the Effra Clinic in 2015 with her colleagues Dr Maltezos and Dr Paliokosta. She combines a leadership role in the NHS with her work in the Effra Clinic. Her NHS practice is in the adult ADHD and autism service at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

Background

Dr Whitwell qualified as a doctor after attending medical school at King's College London. She trained in psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital in addition to working as a Psychiatry Registrar in Australia and New Zealand.


Dr Whitwell is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and she is on the General Medical Council specialist register.



Experience

During her training, she completed a one year research post in the treatment of children with ADHD at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience and this sparked her interested in neurodevelopmental disorders. In 2011 she completed her training in general adult psychiatry and took up a consultant post in the Maudsley adult ADHD and Autism service.


Dr Whitwell is currently the clinical director for adult neurodevelopmental disorders at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust


Dr Whitwell runs training for clinicians in adult ADHD and Autism for the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience and The Royal College of Psychiatrists.



Other information

As well as a special interest in ADHD and Autism, Dr Whitwell has always been a passionate advocate for education and training.  She is involved in teaching and mentoring at undergraduate and post graduate level both in the UK and internationally and she has a master’s in medical education.
